The negative, the positive and the chemistry all stay sealed in one sheet forever. The image you hold is the only one that will ever exist.
Integral instant film reached the market in 1972. Before it, instant photography meant peeling a print away from a negative and throwing the negative out. Integral film sealed the whole process inside a single sheet that never comes apart.
Everything people recognise about the look — the washed highlights, the warm cast, the edges that fall away, the wide white chin — follows from that engineering constraint.
Everything Sealed in One Sheet
Inside the sheet are the light-sensitive layers, the receiving layer where the final image forms, the developing chemistry, and an opaque reagent that shields the frame from light while it works. When the picture is ejected, rollers burst a pod and spread that reagent across the sheet.
The chemistry has one pass. There is no second attempt, no adjustment, no reprint. Whatever the reagent does in those minutes is the photograph, permanently.
This is why highlights wash out and why shadows compress: a single-pass process in an unheated room has a limited tonal range to work with, and the design chose to protect the midtones.
Modern instant film is sensitive to temperature and to light immediately after ejection. Shield the print for the first minute and keep it near room temperature while it develops — cold produces a blue cast, heat produces a warm one.
Why the Chin Is Wide
The white border is not symmetric. The bottom edge is far deeper than the other three, and the reason is mechanical: the reagent pod has to live somewhere, and it lives there.
A design constraint became the most recognisable frame in photography. People write on it, date it, hand it to someone. The chin turned a photograph into an object you could pass across a table.
That is also why the film lab returns this format square with the wide bottom border. Cropping it to 3:2 or centring the border would be a different object.
What Happened, and What Came Back
Polaroid stopped making instant film in 2008. The formulas were not simply restarted later — much of the original chemistry depended on suppliers and materials that had gone. A group bought the last factory and spent years reverse-engineering a working emulsion from an incomplete starting point.
Film is available again today, and it is genuinely different from the 1970s stock: different colour response, different development time, different behaviour in cold. Comparing a modern instant photograph to a vintage SX-70 print is comparing two related but distinct materials.
Our model is built on the vintage look, because that is what people mean when they name it.
The Model
In the film lab this emulsion is modelled as Integral Instant 150. The strength dial scales the model itself rather than blending it with your original, so zero returns your file mathematically untouched and 150 pushes it past anything the film did. Where This Model Falls Short
Integral Instant 150 is Vintizer’s own model, built by studying how Polaroid SX-70 behaved. It is described as being after that film because that is what it is — a model, not the film.
