CineStill 800T is cinema colour negative sold for still cameras. It reached the market in 2012, and almost everything distinctive about it follows from one modification: a layer that was there to prevent a specific optical artefact has been taken away.
The result is a film defined by the thing other films were engineered to avoid.
Remjet, and Why It Was There
Motion picture colour negative carries a black backing called remjet on the reverse of the base. It does several jobs at once — it is anti-static, it acts as a lubricant through the camera mechanism, and most importantly it is anti-halation.
Without it, bright light passes through the emulsion, reaches the film base, and reflects back up to expose the emulsion a second time from underneath. That second exposure spreads outward from the highlight, and because the red-sensitive layer sits deepest, what returns is red.
Remjet also cannot go through standard C-41 chemistry. It has to be removed mechanically in a process ordinary photo labs do not run, which is why cinema stock could not simply be handed to your local lab.
The single most useful thing to know: halation appears where a highlight is much brighter than its surroundings. A streetlight against a dark sky blooms hard. The same streetlight at dusk barely blooms at all. If you want the effect, you need contrast, not just brightness.
The Trade That Makes the Film
CineStill removes the remjet before the film is spooled. That single change makes it processable anywhere in normal C-41 — and simultaneously guarantees the halation, because nothing is left to stop the light bouncing back.
So the glow around every streetlight, neon sign and headlight is not a stylistic layer added by anyone. It is the physical behaviour of an emulsion missing its backing. Nobody engineered that halo. They engineered its absence away.
It is worth being precise about this because the film is often described as having a “dreamy” or “cinematic” quality, as though it were a look someone designed. It is closer to an honest side effect that turned out to be desirable.
Tungsten Balance
The T in the name means tungsten-balanced: the film is calibrated for artificial light at roughly 3200K rather than daylight at 5500K. Shot indoors under warm bulbs it renders neutral. Shot outdoors in daylight without correction it goes distinctly blue.
That blue cast is not a fault either, and plenty of people shoot it in daylight deliberately. If you want neutral daylight, an 85B warming filter corrects it at the cost of about two thirds of a stop.
Combined with ISO 800, this is fundamentally a night film. It exists for streets after dark, interiors, and the hours when everything else has run out of light.
The Model
In the film lab this emulsion is modelled as Tungsten Bloom 800. The strength dial scales the model itself rather than blending it with your original, so zero returns your file mathematically untouched and 150 pushes it past anything the film did.
