Kodachrome 64
Structurally a black and white film. The colour was added during development, by a process only one lab on earth could still run by the end.
Kodachrome 64 has been out of production since 2009, and the last roll anywhere in the world was developed on 30 December 2010, at a lab in Parsons, Kansas. You cannot buy it. You cannot process it — the chemistry required to develop it no longer exists commercially.
And yet people keep asking what it looked like, because it did not look like anything else, and because a great deal of the twentieth century was photographed on it.

One Name, Two Films
A confusion worth clearing up first, because it makes searching for information frustrating.
Kodachrome the brand launched in 1935. Kodachrome 64 — the specific ISO 64 emulsion most people mean when they say the word — arrived in 1974, replacing Kodachrome II. So a photograph from 1955 and a photograph from 1995 might both be labelled Kodachrome, and they will not look the same.
When people describe “the Kodachrome look” they are almost always describing Kodachrome 64. That is the version modelled in the film lab.
What It Did to a Picture
Three behaviours define it, and they interact.
The blacks close down early. Shadows on Kodachrome do not roll off gently into grey the way they do on colour negative film. They fall away and stay closed. This is why Kodachrome frames often look like they were lit by a single hard source even when they were not — the shadow detail simply is not recorded.
The palette is narrow, and deliberately so. Kodachrome does not saturate everything. Greens sit back. Blues stay slightly cool and never turn cyan. But reds and warm oranges come forward hard, with a density no other emulsion matched. A red jacket on Kodachrome reads as a red jacket in a way it does not on Ektachrome or Portra.
The grain is almost absent. At ISO 64 the emulsion is very fine. People misremember old photographs as grainy; Kodachrome frames are often sharper and cleaner than the digital files that replaced them.
Put together: high contrast, restrained colour except in the reds, almost no grain. That combination is why the look reads as documentary rather than nostalgic.
The Process Nobody Could Run at Home
Here is the part that explains both why Kodachrome looked unique and why it died.
Almost every other colour film carries its colour couplers inside the emulsion. You develop it, the dyes form in place, and any competent lab can run the process — C-41 for negatives, E-6 for slides.
Kodachrome does not work that way. Structurally it is a black and white film with three stacked light-sensitive layers and no colour in it at all. The colour is added during development, one layer at a time, each requiring its own controlled re-exposure and its own dye coupler. The process was called K-14, and it involved something on the order of a dozen carefully sequenced steps.
This is the trade-off that produced the look. Because the couplers were not sitting in the emulsion taking up space, the light-sensitive layers could be thinner and finer — hence the sharpness and the near-absent grain. It also made the dyes exceptionally stable in dark storage, which is why Kodachrome slides from the 1970s still look correct in a box today while contemporaneous colour negatives have gone orange.
And it is why nobody could keep it alive. A film that only one process can develop dies the day that process becomes uneconomic.
Why It Ended
Kodak discontinued Kodachrome in June 2009. By then it was down to a single remaining lab worldwide willing to run K-14. That lab, Dwayne’s Photo, accepted rolls until the end of 2010 and processed the last of them on 30 December.
The usual explanation is digital, and that is broadly true, but it undersells how specific the failure was. Kodachrome did not lose to digital sensors alone — it lost to E-6, decades earlier. E-6 slide film was good enough, could be processed by any lab, and eventually by photographers themselves. Kodachrome’s advantage was real but narrow, and its dependency was total.
The Model
Nothing you can buy today will give you a Kodachrome frame, because the thing that made it Kodachrome was the process, and the process is gone. What you can do is reproduce the behaviour.
In the film lab this emulsion is modelled as Hard Shadow 64: the blue channel is lifted and pulled down in gain, contrast is raised, saturation is increased slightly while the green response is held back, grain is set very low, and a mild warm halation is added. If You Want to Shoot Something Close
No film currently made behaves like Kodachrome. But if what you want is a reversal slide with closed shadows and controlled colour, there are reasonable starting points.
